• The Belgian-based 'Fuel Club' which promised to bring cheaper fuel into the UK for hauliers has admitted its scheme will not now be launched until next July at the earliest.
Jim Wallace, co-founder of the scheme run by Fuel Club NV of Ostend, says that the latest setback is the result of "red tape over the issue of VAT registration". He adds that it will take months of complex dialogue with Customs and Excise before the first movement of cut price fuel can begin.
Membership of the club will be open to operators who can take deliveries of at least 30,000 litres. The source of the fuel is a Middle Eastern refinery which partly owns the Fuel Club. But hauliers may be tired of the watt. The first delivery of fuel was due back in November 2000.
