The Success of Existing Bus Services is Inducing the Municipality to Replace More Trams by Buses.
WIGAN Town Council was informed at its June meeting of the great progress of the motorbus department. It was stated that the income of the
New Springs tramway service was in sufficient to meet expenditure. The tramways committee had, therefore, decided, as an experiment for six months, to substitute motorbuses. Alderman Fletcher said that two or three buses would be needed for the service, and with the additional buses en order from the makers no extra capital expenditure would be incurred.
Owing to the few passengers who used the trams on the Poolstock section, the committee proposed to adopt the experiment of using a 26-seater bus on that route. The committee considered that another make of bus should be tried,, and suggested one of the Bristol type.
Councillor Alstead pointed out that the corporation now had 38 vehicles on the road. He hoped that when purchasing vehicles the tramways committee would bear in mind the increase Iii the bus-building industry in Wigan.
