• The Norfolk firm of L. G. Perfect (Haulage) Ltd has taken over a former ship engineering works at Great Yarmouth as a commercial vehicle repair and maintenance depot.
It is planned to undertake container repairs and steel fabrications and to offer warehousing and storage facilities. Recruiting of skilled men is now going on in preparation for a September opening. • The Cumberland Export Club is to meet road transport industry representatives in order to form a groupage system for shipping small consignments. The principal problem is said to be the difficulty of getting transport companies to take part lorry-loads—because they are uneconomic to handle through delays at the docks.
Besides Northern port authority representatives, those attending were National Carriers Ltd, British Road Services Ltd and Robson's Border Transport. Under a groupage system, all part-consignments would be handled initially by NCL which would, in turn, arrange with others for the best method of transport to the ship.
Hauliers said that the trend to "de-rail" the docks created a dependence on road vehicles, causing delays to drivers.
