Criminal gangs are using the chronic driver shortage as cover to infiltrate employment agencies and prey on the haulage industry through truck theft.
The Institute of Logistics and Transport (III) warned at its conference this week that unless haulage is made "more glamourous and recruitment and retention are knproved, then crininals will continue to prospen
Brian Ford, director of cor porate communications at the ILT, adds: "Police are concerned that the driver shortfall is being made up by agencies, who may have been Infiltrated by highlyorganised criminal gangs. They [the gangs] are using this opportunity to steal payloads and the trucks, which are then sold on the black market."
Police are now calling for a national vetting scheme for agency drivers.
