• Union bosses arc demanding sanctions against transport employers who fail to recognise a union when workers vote for one. The Government plans to make employers legally obliged to recognise a union if a majority of the relevant workforce vote for it. But this does not go far enough, warn unions.
Bryan points out that if a union transgresses the law its assets can be seized. Employers should be treated in a similar fashion, he believes. "There is no point bringing in a requirement unless there are penalties for non-compliance."
El The GMB union, which has been in dispute with snack food firm Walkers since the company was taken over by Pepsico in 1995, is pressing for tough action to be taken against firms that refuse to accept the wishes of their staff.
The union has tried to make its own stand against Walkers by boycotting all the company's products since the Pepsico takeover.
