• Exel Logistics, part of the UK's largest transport company, NFC, has made a 3% pay offer to its staff—the lowest so far in this year's pay round.
Danny Bryan, Transport & General Workers Union national secretaryroad transport, says the offer has been rejected by the negotiating committee . It will be put to a mass meeting of shop stewards on 8 April.
As well as an improved pay offer, the union will be looking for a "significant improvement in pension entitlement" from NR: this year, says Bryan,
The rejected pay deal comes hot on the heels of oil company BP's 6% pay offer, which has now been accepted after an initial rejection (CM 29 Jan-4 Feb).
BP has made some slight adjustments to its offer; under the new terms the lower paid drivers (about half of the 150 drivers covered by the deal) will receive 6%. The rest will get a lump sum of £500.
This year's pay offers in the haulage industry are averaging 3.5%-4%, says T&G regional officer Maurice Britton.
