Emergency brakes from 2013
TRUCKS WILL HAVE to be fitted with advanced emergency braking systems and lane-departure warning systems under EU legislation coming into effect 2013.
As par: of the proposals, which were approved by the EU parliament in Strasbourg last week, mandatory electronic stability-control systems will also be phased in for trucks between 2011 and 2016.
Member states have indicated their support for the rules, making their final approval by national governments a formality.
German MEP Andreas Schwab, who sponsored the legislation through the EU parliament, says the new measures should cut the numbers of people being killed in road accidents.
He adds: "More road security will be provided by electronic emergency brake systems and lane assistants for trucks from 2013 onwards.
"Taking into account the number of accidents with this type of vehicle, this is an important step".
