CWO commerical vehicle body designs are included in this year's Design Council British Motor ndustry Awards winners. Mousley Trucking Ltd of Rugby's Jumbo Legs — retractable legs which )ermit a trailer to be loaded from the front — won one of the awards. E. M. Wilcox's fold-in-side ipper body, described in last week's CM was the other winner.
The Jumbo Legs are manufactured under licence by Merriworth Trailers of Erith and are available on trailers up to 45 tons.
Twenty-three year old Phillip Mousley thought of the Jesign as a simple alternative to removing a trailer's rear wheels when loading and unloading heavy equipment.
Like the Design Council judging panel — chaired by Raymond Baxter — he was surprised that no one had thought of the idea before.
So far, sales of the legs have been slow, as operators have wished to try them out before committing themselves to fleet replacement.
Both Mousley and Merriworth expect the award to focus attention on the legs and encourage orders.
It has been sold for use on car transporters, coach recovery trailers, plant carriers, container carriers, and general cargo removers. Merriworth also sees potential for its use on military vehicle carriers.
Other award winners were the Triplex Ten Twenty windsci-een which combines the properties of laminated and toughened glass, and the Ford Fiesta car.
A special commendation went to a GKN Sankey invalid car based on BL's Mini running gear. The awards will be presented in Glasgow on May 31, by the Duke of Edinburgh.
Entries for the 1979 awards must be submitted to the Design Council by July 31.
