Nellie Grocott, energetic and resourceful, both ran the firm and reared six girls and one boy (Ray Grocott, the current chairman) from the modern company’s creation in 1941. Nellie’s pivotal role in establishing the Grocott family firm makes it rather less surprising that her granddaughter Linda Grocott is now joint MD of Grocontinental (with her brother David). This has never been a company where women were secondbest. Nellie’s business began as a provider of haulage to local farmers – work made all the more necessary because she had seven small mouths to feed and, as a widow, no money from her husband. Nellie was a colourful figure in Shropshire, usually in a tweed skirt and waxed jacket, striding around the farmers’ markets dealing with customers.
