• A performance-related wages scheme which pays drivers for the work they do, and not the time they spend doing it, is being piloted by National Carriers Contract Services.
The scheme, affecting 1,300 NCCS employees, scraps overtime, and links pay to a "standard hour plan". The move already has the support of the National Union of Railwaymen, which represents most of NCCS's workers.
The NUR says it endorses the general principles of the scheme at a national level. Employees will be used more productively, and it will benefit staff and customers, it claims.
Bob Milton, general manager of NCCS's Swindon-based Woolworths distribution, says it has increased driver productivity there by 34%.
Employees are paid pre-set
allowances for each task they complete. Waiting time is not paid, but drivers earn 80% of their hourly rate if they break down.
"This is the most emotive point," says Milton, "but we do take into account delay factors — sometimes drivers make up time; sometimes they lose time. "Drivers are earning more and working more of their paid hours."
The scheme is now being phased in nationally.
