Croydon Council wanted to make North End, the town's main shopping street, into a traffic-free zone. At present only delivery lorries and buses can use it during the day.
The Freight Transport Association, London Buses and fast food outlets such as McDonakls, who rely heavily on daily deliveries, have strongly resisted the move. Croydon Council says it did not think there would be so much opposition and consulted all interested parties — but warns that it still wants to ban traffic from the high street.
