• Hauliers harassed by protesting crowds should benefit from a new Scotland Yard unit aimed at reducing public order offences.
Meat hauliers, livestock operators and milk tanker companies will be the most likely beneficiaries of the unit, although it will also target environmental ists who disrupt road building projects. Hauliers experiencing delays by farmers and protesters at ports could also be helped.
The National Public Order Intelligence Unit is being set up by the Metropolitan Police to gather and co-ordinate information from national police services on public order incidents and the people behind them.
The unit will takeover and update the Animal Rights National Index, which lists known saboteurs.
The development comes as the Animal Liberation Front says another phase of attacks on meat and livestock trucks is about to begin (CM 12-18 Nov). Last week terrorists attacked four trucks run by RP Meats at a Brighton meat market, causing 4150,000 of damage.
