The pickup market has suffered badly in the recession, especially such shiny versions as the Wildtrak.
However, in these economically tough times, they do, in fact, make a great deal of sense.
In essence, what you get for your money is a solid commercial vehicle and a four-seater passenger car all rolled into one.
The subtle updates to the exterior and the addition of an auto gearbox on the 2.5-litre diesel have helped bring Ford's pickup in line with its modern-day competitors.
However, the changes that have been made are not drastic enough to propel the vehicle to the top of the class, and it comes a close second to the all-conquering Toyota Hilux in the lifestyle commercial vehicle category.
That said, if you've got your heart set on a Ford Ranger, then the 2.5-litre Thunder in 4x4 guise is, undoubtedly, the pick of the bunch.
It might be less flashy than the Wildtrak, but it makes more sense on a number of levels, primarily that its cheaper to buy and cheaper to run.
