motorways could face massive delays next year because the concrete supports of a London flyover are crumbling due to road gritting.
Salt has seeped through the asphalt surface of the Chiswick flyover on the M4 where sealants have failed and caused "concrete cancer".
Alastair Frew of the Highways Agency, says: "Safety is paramount, but this is not an immediate short-term crisis. During the maintenance programme traffic delays will be kept to a minimum. We are working at nights to improve waterproofing and will spend one weekend removing a sample cross-head for damage inspection.
