• Sixteen tanker drivers at Linkman's Batley, West Yorks depot are threatening strike action after the firm offered a below-inflation, 2.5% pay increase. The drivers, who have nor had a pay rise for four years, handle spot work for the hulk liquid division of Transport Development Group (TDG). They are expected to ballot for industrial action in the next few weeks.
Transport 8.; General Workers Union negotiator Maurice Britten says the drivers are looking for a pay rise of at least 5% simply to bring their earnings back up to the level of a few years ago. "With inflation currently running at 3.9% the drivers have effectively been taking pay cuts over the last four years," he says. Now they feel that enough is enough."
A TDG spokesman says that negotiations of the "local" agreement are still on going.
Li In the first half of 1995 TDG increased its operating profit by 3.5% to £17.3 million before tax on a turnover up £250,000 to 1242m.
