• High-sided vehicles will be restricted from using the £25m Skye Bridge in severe weather conditions, admits the Scottish office.
Although denying reports this week that the bridge would be closed for 560 hours every year because of high winds, the Scottish Office admitted that winds reaching over 35mph would prevent any lorry, van or caravan from using the crossing, effectively marooning vehi cies on the island. Skye is known for high winds, particularly in January when the island is often hit by violent gales.
The ferry service that has served the island for almost a century has been withdrawn.
Bridge tolls will be almost identical to the old ferry prices: £ 9.90 for light goods vehicles, £ 12.70 for class one HGVs and £ 25.40 for class two. Season tickets can cut the costs by almost 50%.
