THE RECESSION and fall in container volumes have not been enough to interfere with container haulier Elite Transport Services' five-year expansion plan, with the company ploughing ahead and opening a new depot in Bristol.
The Manchester-based firm opened the Bristol facility last month. It is close to junction 18 of the M5 to serve the major ports, south Wales and the West Country The company says the new site forms an integral part of its strategy, and adds: "We have resisted the temptation to sideline this development due to the recession, and carried on to make it happen."
Brian Walker. commercial di rector at Elite Transport Services, tells CM he expects two more depots to be open by 2012.
The firm is currently in the third year of its five-year plan.
Meanwhile, five drivers are being made redundant at Elite's Manchester site.
Walker explains: 'Me withdrawal of the rail services from southern ports into Manchester by DB Schenker earlier in the year has caused a decline in business coming into the region by train.
But he adds: "As a company, we have far more positive than negative news, as the container shipping market continues to climb out of the recession."
