Under existing regulations, when travelling by ferry or train, daily rest can only be interrupted once; part of the rest has to be taken on land, and the interruption must be no longer than one hour. Then, the rest period is increased by two hours. Under the new rules, it can be interrupted twice — as long as the rest period is at least 11 hours. As now, the driver must still have access to a bunk during his rest period. Generally a good thing, according to the experts. It offers more flexibility for drivers trying to meet their rest requirements.
