To be honest, 2006 was not a vintage year for CM'S truck testers. The biggest single reason was the imminent arrival of the Euro-4 emissions standard. The heavy truck manufacturers, who were understandably reluctant to squander resources on soon-to-be obsolete products, effectively suspended their press fleets for much of the year. As a result we only carried out full solo tests on three tractors and four light-to-middleweight distribution vehicles. Not a single tipper came our way.
By way of contrast it was definitely a vintage year for van testing, with more model launches than we can recall in any other single year. This allowed us to publish 36 full tests during the year.
And it wasn't all bad news on the heavyweight front: We carried out a record 10 group tests, each involving between four and 14 vehicles. Undoubtedly, the highlight of these was CMs biggest test yet, comparing Euro-4 tractor units. A fleet of eight Euro-4 trucks were comprehensively tested on a round-Britain route of 1,000 miles. This project involved six months of planning and the services of dozens of people.
Once again, CMs team of testers has reviewed all the vans and trucks tested during the year and chosen our favourites in each category, as well as taking a final look back at the CM/Shell 1,000-Mile Euro-4 Test.
