bought fellow paper carrier Broads Transport of Plymouth as part of its aim to become a nationwide company.
The deal, completed for an undisclosed sum, is Fergusons' third large acquisition in as many years.
In 1994 it took over Redpath Brothers of Wooler and last year it acquired Bells of Ashington. Alan Ferguson, managing director of Fergusons, says Broads has 29 trailers and 26 full-time staff. The deal will not lead to any redundancies.
Ferguson sees the acquisition as part of his company's steady expansion to becoming a national company. He says the company's next haulier acquisition will be in Tilbury. The deal also plays a vital part in the company's expansion into Europe—it already transports car parts for Nissan to Spain.
