UNLESS the price of new vehicles is kept within reasonable control, purchases by Barr and Wallace Arnold trust, Ltd., will have to be restricted, Mr. Robert Barr, chairman, says in his annual statement. He draws attention to the fact that there has been a 25-percent. increase in the cost of coach bodies in recent years.
"In many cases it is cheaper to hire a Continental coach than to use one of our own on the Continent because of the high cost of capital replacement," he adds. To succeed in a competitive market, it was essential that the concern's coaches be of the highest possible standard. In maintaining this, a depreciation charge, now in excess of £100,000 a year, appeared in the accounts.
Referring to recent wage awards, Mr. Barr says that frequencies on some stage services may have to be reduced. Reluctance to increase fares might affect the amount of labour employed, he says. He reports, however, that stage services continue to contribute to profits of the group.
