Cyril Knowles of Purfleet, says that the firm is more likely to employ a driver his age than a youngster of 25. Two drivers have recently retired at 65. He is not opposed to employers specifying an age range: "Some jobs are young men's jobs, such as young guns prepared to go across Europe for £120 a week. As long as they have a nice new motor, they don't mind what money they're getting—as far as I am concerned you could give me a pushbike!" Nonetheless, he says its "ridiculous" that one well-known oil company has an upper age-limit of 30 on recruitment.
