• The rising costs of tipping and fuel along with local council policies have led a Northwich-based waste haulier to close his business.
Family firm JA Renshaw & Sons, which specialises in householders and builders' waste, is to cease trading after 30 years. Proprietor Steven Renshaw says small companies such as his are being hit by increases in tipping fees and discrimination against smaller operators.
He adds that last October fees at a local tip site run by the Waste Recycling Group rose by .23/tonne—and claims that the site charges a 30% surcharge if the firm doesn't meet a monthly quota of 100 tonnes of light commercial waste.
Renshaw was also refused planning permission to extend its skip business. "The odds are stacked against family firms like ours," says Renshaw. you employ 20 or 30 staff you can apply for business grants, but we employ only seven people. We're very sad to be selling up, but we've got to the point where it's not worth carrying on," JA Renshaw & Sons will auction its skip loaders, bins and plant equipment on 3 March.
