• Warehousing and transport firm Seafield considered pulling out of general haulage because profit margins are so low, says managing director Lyle Noble. Seafield decided to stay in the business but changed focus, concentrating on specialist sectors such as its powder tanker business. Over the past 18 months the powder tanker fleet, which delivers raw material to the glass industry, has been expanded and upgraded. Seafield has just placed an order for four new tanker trailers.
Seafield blames competitive conditions for a drop in operating profit in the second half of 1 996---the total for the year was 2856,000.
Overall, Seafield reported a pre-tax profit of t 192,000 for 1996, compared with a loss of £3.8m in 1995.
