Following the Chancellor's announcement in the Budget, the Government is introducing a new system of vehicle excise duty (VED) for lorries on 1 December 2001. The new system will enable around 80% of lorry VED transactions to take place at Post Offices and will provide hauliers with more flexibility to change their lorries' weight and axle structure without having to relicense their vehicle.
Hauliers can continue to operate their lorries at their present plated weight, relicensing* in their choice of VED Band when their current licence expires.
To relicense under the new system, find your VED Band from your vehicle's weight and whether it is a rigid, two or three axle tractive lorry and then apply that to the VED Band Rates of Duty shown in the top table.
For further information on these changes to VED and for a copy of the replating application form (VTG10) visit either the DULA or VI websites at www.dvla.gov.uk or www.via.gov.uk. Leaflets are available from DULA, its Local Offices and from Vehicle Inspectorate test stations or call DVLA Customer Enquiries (Vehicles) on 0870 607 6688.
*Please note that if you want to operate your vehicle at a different plated weight you must first apply to the Vehicle Inspectorate at Welcombe House, 91-92 The Strand, Swansea, SA1 2DA for a new plating certificate.
