• A regional development agency is to help fund four recruitment fairs as part of a drive to revitalise haulage in the north of England.
Geoff Dunning, northern regional director of the Road Haulage Association, says the five-figure cash injection from Yorkshire Forward will also be used to research where skill shortages are most acute in the industry.
"I find it particulaq encouraging that the regional development agency is recognising the importance of freght to their economy," he adds.
The cash will be channelled through Freight Business Yorkshire & Humber; a multi modal group which was set up 18 months ago.
Dunning says the fairs will be aimed at two main markets: HGV drivers who have left the industry and people interested in HGV driving for the first time. "It's important to stress that this is one part of the package," he says. "It goes into other areas apart from the skills issue."
