HAULAGE BOSSES have been advised to tell drivers to avoid parking in lay-bys on the A17 as it is a hotspot for fuel thefts.
Mike Jones, neighbourhood policing inspector for North Kesteven, part of Lincolnshire Police, has told CM that over the past six months there has been a steady increase in fuel siphoning from lorries parked overnight.
“The lay-bys are remote and unlit, and not many people travel on the A17 during the dead of night. The lorries are like sitting ducks and are being targeted by thieves,” said Jones.
“We are advising drivers, but either they don’t move or just go back to sleep. I recognise their dilemma of needing to stop due to drivers’ hours rules, but if I were in their position then I would plan my journey differently.” According to Jones, there are several secure truck parking options nearby. “There is secure parking on the A1 near Grantham; the A1 near Newark; supervised and well-lit parking on the A15 Nocton Heath. There is also secure parking on the A17 near Long Sutton.”
