THE PRESENT levels of bus services operated in Liverpool are too high. This is the result of moving people from the city centre.
This was argued by Mr R J Duffy for the Merseyside PTE when it sought a comprehensive rationalisation of services to reduce them in line with current demand before the North Western Traffic Commissioners at Manchester on September 27.
Mr Duffy said traffic had fallen steadily over the last decade. Between 1971 and the middle of 1975 there had been full year. It was the PTE's duty to avoid wasteful expenditure on the operation of unnecessary services.
The PTE was prepared to operate special journeys outside the proposed general operating hours where a case could be made out for doing so, said Kenneth Harris, divisional manager south.
Granting the applications with some minor variations to meet objectors the Chairman, Mr R D Hutchings said the curtailment of bus services was likely in the present economic situation of the industry.
