Tyne and Wear THIRTY double-deck buses currently under construction by Willowbrook Limited will bring the "Nottingham style" to the Tyne and Wear PTE, which has standardised in recent years on Alexander bodies for all its new deckers. The order was transferred from the Scottish coach builder to speed up the introduction of new double-deckers into the largely single-deck dominated Sunderland division of the PTE.
Based on the Atlantean AN68 A-2R chassis, the 10m 2-doorway buses will seat 76 passengers, and will be the first Willowbrook doubledeckers to feature the near side staircase favoured by the PTE. Many features common to the Alexander bodies for Tyne and Wear will be incorporated, though normal Willowbrook pillar spacing will be employed with 3ft Ilin windows in place of the panoramic windows normally used by Tyne and Wear.
General body appearance will be very similar to that of bodies already supplied by Willowbrook to Nottingham City Transport.
In addition to the new contract, Willowbrook is also tendering to supply double deckers to other operators. A spokesman for the company told CM on Monday that, during the supply problems affecting double-deck chassis they had concentrated on the coach and single-deck express bus market. Now that there was a surplus of double-deck chassis Willowbrook hoped to expand output in this field.
