Beanie has finally launched a two-pedal version of its Opticruise automated gear change system (on the 8-, 12and 14-speed synchromesh boxes). A three-pedal version is retained for those who insist on DIY dutch work although we expect take-up to be minimal because the two-pedal unit is so driver-friendly.
Clutch automation on the two-pedal Opticruise is achieved via an electro-hydraulic control system. Backed up with new management software, the latest version is smoother, faster thinking and more inclined to shift up at the earliest opportunity. A manoeuvring mode has been added, operated by pushing the column-mounted selector lever forward, which reduces throttle input for optimum control when reversing and turning in tight depots. Hill Hold is standard on the fully-automated (two-pedal) version, and a retarder remains optional.
Although Opticruise comes with an economy/power mode switch, and throttle kick-down, both can be programmed out; the manual override can't be deleted. Other updates include a rocking function for tippers, which, via sensing of wheel-slippage on the drive axle, provides quick disengagement and re-engagement of the clutch through judicious use of the throttle.
Finally, Scania offers a faster (numerically-lower) 2.59:1 H780 single-reduction back axle for economic cruising, bringing engine revs down to below 1,200rpm at motorway speeds with a direct top gearbox.
