A Useful Tool of Special Appeal to Gearcutting Operatives ASHORT time ago we dealt with a new type of floating reamer introduced by David Brown and Sons (Huddersfield), Ltd., Huddersfield, and this useful tool has been followed by another in the shape of a gear-tooth vernier gauge of a simplified type. We understand that the prototype was, for some time, used on actual production work, and that the operatives preferred it to the type previously used
In addition to simplicity in manufacture, this new instrument has the advantage of requiring setting only to the linear dimension between the fixed and moving anvils Fig, 1 shows the tool together with a range Of setting tubes, each of which is lapped to precise length. The head of the gauge is in the form of a micrometer dial and is graduated in 1,000th in.
It can be used not only as a comparator, but as one would use a micrometer, for initial measurement,
In Fig. 2 is shown how the required reading is obtained over a number of teeth, and, as the anvils are tangent to the tooth flanks, a definite " feel" is obtained, as when
using a micrometer on a cylindrical object; no height measurenient is involved.
The setting of the gauge is simple and those of our , readers who are interested can obtain full information on application to the maker.
