• VW is launching a Brazilianbuilt 7.5-tanner at the Hanover show. The L80 is powered by a 4.3-litre intercooled Brazilian MWM engine (said to be Euro-1 compatible) which produces 138hp (103kW) at 2,600 rpm with max torque of 310 lbft (420Nm) at 1,500-1,750 rpm. A Euro2 version should be launched next year.
Power is transmitted through a five-speed Clark gearbox to a Rockwelltype back axle. The tilt cab, developed from
the original joint MAN-VW G90 design, is expected to be offered to the European market in lefthand drive only.
Chassis cab weight will be around 3.2 tonnes while the maximum train weight is just short of 11 tonnes.
Two wheelbase's will be available-3.3m and 3.9m— with the ladder frame chassis capable of taking bodies up to 5.5m long.
While the model is new to the European market it is one of a VW truck line-up that goes up to 24 tonnes.
With a competitive price tag, the L80 is expected to attract a market share of up to 10. There are also tentative plans to import a 10 tonne GCW version.
