BOSSES AT Gate Gourmet are paying drivers a £500 bonus to brave the picket and take meals from its kitchens to planes at Heathrow as the dispute rumbles on.
A spokesman says: "Despite the testing times we are running near to full service. It is important that we have the right amount of drivers to continue our service to British Airways or operations will fall over and we will be going backwards."
Talks between the firm and the Transport & General Workers' Union broke down over whether 670 axed staff should be reinstated. A T&G spokeswoman says: We would like to see all our members reinstated, but understand that due to financial problems cuts will have to be made."
Gate Gourmet has been criticised for launching a new firm, Versa Logistics, to counter the threat of wildcat action and take on lower-paid Polish drivers.
However, it claims that these plans were drafted by managers who are no longer with the company (CM 18 August).
