Looking for ways to protect himself from the roller-coaster of potato prices, Glenn is exploring a contract partnership with a local grower, but he has also specified and bought his fleet with a view to long-term survival. As a unit that can provide a simple traction service, the DAF offers him flexibility in any future downturn, and a step-frame trailer is pretty adaptable too. As for fleet acquisition, Glenn eschews contract hire, HP and bank loans, preferring to fund the new truck from his own business reserves. “Despite what you hear, the banks are still not helping businesses like mine. There seems to be no such thing as a simple loan with fixed payments. I can get the money OK, but it’s all surrounded by so much smoke and mirrors, I won’t touch it,” he says.
