Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

We operate an Austin 4 x 4 Model KS which is converted to, and registered as, a "digging machine". It is used on the road only between sites and carries nothing other than equipment pertaining to its function of boring holes in the ground. We have always understood that it was illegal to tow any type of trailer on the road with such a machine but it has been brought to our notice that such towing is not unknown.

It would be of considerable use if we could tow a site caravan, or a mobile (twowheeled) compressor, or a two-wheeled trailer carrying fuel, boring tools, etc, or a second drilling machine which is itself a two-wheeled trailer. Is it legally possible to do this?

AIf your vehicle complies fully with the current Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations, and if the combination of vehicle and a particular trailer complies with these regulations, then there is no legal reason why it should not tow a trailer.
