What about that increase in the Dartford Tunnel tolls, up 100 per cent last week, There I was with my 121/2 pence at the ready to thrust into the toll-keeper's hand. "Twenty-five pence," he said. "I'm not coming back," I said. "It's twenty-five pence one way," he replied. I paid up. What else could I do, there were dozens of other vehicles .piled up behind?
But I got to thinking: Why should the price rise 100 per cent? The bricks and mortar don't need more money; the overdraft at the bank may be costing more, but not that much more. What could it be? Got it! The toll collectors' wages.
How do you get out of that, then. Easy, put in automatic barriers like those at unattended car parks. Without attendants, who must be costing about £50,000 a year, we might be back to the 10p toll. Just a thought.
