Due to retire early next year, after a long and varied career in road transport is Arthur Wood, now chief automobile engineer of the Co-operative Wholesale Society Ltd. at Davyhulme, in Manchester. At an 1RTE meeting recently (he was one of the Institute's founder members) he was recalling some of the tribulations of running the DG6 Sentinel steamer and later the WD-type Maudslays.
He remembers coming into Bawtry one early foggy morning and pulling up five miles short of the nearest all-night café. Soon a horse popped its head over the gate of a field and was coaxed into taking Arthur and his mate into the town. On being accosted by the local bobby they explained that they had found the horse wandering in the fog and were bringing it into the police station. However, the ruse worked because some weeks later a letter was received from the farmer thanking them for protecting his stock!
