• A driver who admitted his truck was in a dangerous condition before it lost a wheel which killed another motorist has been banned from driving for a year.
College lecturer Rodger Mathers was killed instantly when a wheel from a lorry being driven by Michael Haigh crashed into his Fiat Punto car on the A14 on 26 October 1995.
Haigh, of Sheridan Drive, Rotherham, South Yorks, admitted he had used a lorry when the wheels were in a state likely to cause danger or injury to other persons when he appeared al Stowmarket Magistrates Court last week.
Haigh told the court he was oblivious to the loss of the wheel which killed Mathers and only became aware of the problem when a second wheel came off. Even then he continued to drive, dragging the truck along the ground for nearly three miles

until he reached a lorry park. Haigh also admitted 12 offences of exceeding driving hours limits without taking a rest and failing to use tachograph in accordance with the regulations. He was disqualified from driving for a year and fined £450 with £400 costs.
Peter Coley, for Haigh, said his client intended to appeal against the sentence.
