Transfrigoroute, the European trade body for the temperature-controlled transport industry, has launched a campaign to gain an extra 200mm of length for refrigerated trailers.
Campaigners argue that current dimensions do not allow sufficient airflow throughout the body when loaded with 33 europallets. it is also asking for the marking of a red maximum load height line inside fridge trailers, a practice already adopted by some operators. to be made compulsory.
Transfrigoroute is concerned at the possibility of poor cold air circulation causing 'hat spots leading to bacterial contamination of food products.
While trailers currently have overall temperature monitoring equipment, this is not able to identify localised temperature rises. An increase of just 200mm would overcome the circulation issue, without providing the temptation to cram another pallet on board.
The campaign is currently canvassing the views of Transfrigoroute UK members and also Euro MPs. In support of the request, Transfrigoroute points out that such trailers would only account for around loo of the European haulage fleet, and that more efficient use of fridge motors would actually produce a reduction in their environmental impact.
