• The London Assembly Green Group says lorries should be charged E15 to enter central London. It says the increased charge takes into account environmental costs such as air quality, noise and road casualties.
Jenny Jones, Green Group spokeswoman, says: "The increase to £15 would go some way to encourage that. Alternatives such as canals, riverboats and underground railways should be used as the cost of pollution far outweighs the extra expense."
But the Freight Transport Association has lambasted the idea, with external affairs director Geoff Dossetter saying that it is far removed from reality. The Green Group seems to think that haulage companies enjoy having their vehicles crawl through central London at peak time. "
