• Truck drivers in Scotland who cause fatal accidents through dangerous driving or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol will face longer jail sentences in future.
Lord Advocate Colin Boyd has ruled that, in future, people accused of either offence should be prosecuted in the High Court where the maximum sentence would be 10 years. Previously they would have stood trial in Scotland's sheriff courts where the maximum penalty was three years' imprisonment.
"Fatal road accidents cause terrible grief to the families and communities affected, and this change reflects how seriously these offences are taken," Boyd says. He adds this followed a review of prosecution practice and were designed to reflect the seriousness of dangerous or careless driving offences.
