ACOMPLICATION in connection with Bradford municipal haulage work was mentioned at a meeting of the transport section of Bradford and District Chamber of Trade, last week, when it was decided to apply for an increase of ls, per hour in the rates paid by Bradford Corporation to hauliers.
It was pointed out that, whilst there was every reason to anticipate that the Road Haulage Wages Order made by the Minister of Labour would enforce a 48-hour guaranteed week for A and B licence holders' employees, as recommended by the Road Haulage Central Wages Board, hauliers employed by Bradford city engineer's department had to stand the hired vehicles off for at least one day per week. This standoff period might be at any time of the week, wild might extend to two or even three days, to suit the convenience of the city engineer's department. Difficulty in fihding other jobs for the vehicles when stood off was emphasized by Mr. W. R. Burton, who presided. The haulier, he said, did not know when the vehicle was to be stOod off until he was notified by the department on the previous night.
The city engineer's department was stated to be paying, at present, 3s. 6d. an hour, and the cleansing department 45. an hour. A Stipulation that 30-cwt. vehicles be employed was made bly the city engineer's department—although it was indicated in discussion that in some cases operators used larger vehicles at the 30-cwt. rate—whilst the cleansing department required 2tonners.
The following were appointed as a committee to put the request for rate increases before the corporation departments concerned :—Messrs W. R. Burton, H. Hall, j. W. Preston, F. Dennison and M. Field,
