in A leading waste management company is to pay out more than £100.000 after faking the amount of potentially harmful waste it was dumping at two landfill sites.
The company, since renamed Onyx Total Waste Management, also falsified the amount of liquids leaching out from one of the sites.
Telford magistrates heard how the licences for the sites at Coalmoor in Telford and Ling Hall near Warwick stipulated how much "difficult" waste could be safely mixed with domestic waste. Barry Berlin. prosecuting for the agency, said: "Difficult waste is a euphemism; it means dangerous waste. In the charges alleged this included waste containing cyanide. mercury and oil." A tip-off from an employee at the Coalmoor site led to a two-and-a-half year investigation by the agency. Leigh pleaded guilty to seven charges of breaching its licence conditions. It was fined £87,500 with £20,553 costs.
