• Truck drivers and motorists should be given more choice on motorway routes and Granada should forfeit some of its service stations, according to the Office of Fair Trading.
The OFT has advised the new trade secretary Ian Lang to refer Granada to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission unless it sells off some of its 27 motorway sites.
Granada bought eight motorway service areas and one trunk road service station From Pavilion in April and the OFT is concerned that the company owns too many consecutive sites along some stretches of motorway.
Granada says it expects to have to sell no more than two or three sites to appease the OFT. According to a company spokesman it will sell the sites to smaller rivals such as RoadChef or Blue Boor, rather than to its main competitor Forte Welcome Break which owns 26 motorway service stations.
