• Britain's truck drivers are a cultured lot who prefer fruit to Yorkie bars, Radio 4 to Chris Evans and never smoke at the wheel, says a new survey.
If anyone doubts that the new age driver has muscled his (or her) way into the cab, they should take a look at the survey carried out by livery company Stewart Signs.
Long-distance drivers shun greasy breakfasts in favour of fruit or a wholesome sandwich. They also prefers scenic routes, like courteous car drivers and don't pick up hitchikers.
Truck drivers have firm views on other road users. The top three faults of car drivers are identified as hogging the middle lane, cutting in and not indicating. Coach drivers should be banned from the outside lane, according to 55% of those surveyed, while 84 % believe that lorry drivers should have a constant speed limit.
Birmingham was pinpointed by 62% of truckers as having the worst traffic jam spot at the M5/M6 interchange. Half named the M25 as the worst motorway to drive on, while the M40 and M6 north of Preston are the favourite roads.
More lay-bys, wider roads and better signs would all improve safety, say drivers, while repairs should be =led out at night to cut the clutter on the roads.
