• Combined transport operator Allied Continental Intermodal claims to have carried about 8,000 swap bodies through the Channel Tunnel in the first six months since June 1994, and says the market is growing. Almost oh its services, which go to Spain, France, Italy and Luxembourg, are full. The company expects to introduce five new services to the continent over coming weeks.
Competitor Combined Transport carried around 4,300 swap bodies and containers for the first six months of operation, but says this figure is unrepresentative because of the intervention of summer holidays and rail strikes.
It now carries 2,500 units a month of which 1650 are swap bodies.
Combined Transport, which is largely owned by UK transport operators, sends trains direct to Italy and France, and from there links on to Austria and Spain.
'We're looking to run direct to Spain and Austria by the end of the year and introduce another train to Italy later in the year," says CTL commercial manager Richard Cole.
"We're not competing with road hauliers. Our customers are transport companies—they have the expertise in looking for distribution solutions," he says.
