global warming was just a good opportunity to get some extra sunbathing in are in for a rude awakening. Anthony Astbury, a scientist with the British Meteorological Office, has warned that over the next century road traffic will regularly grind to a halt as a result of global warming. Worldwide temperatures have risen 0.8° since 1900 and are expected to rise a further 3' by 2100. As the temperature rises extreme weather conditions will become MOM commonplace. "Things will gradually get worse," Astbury told a conference organised by Britain's Transport Research Laboratory at Crowthorne, Berkshire. In Britain although the total rain
fall will remain the same, downpours will replace drizzle, snow showers will be heavier but less frequent and we are more likely to see falls such as the one that closed the M6 in 1990 for 36 hours. In the snowbelts of Russia and the USA temperatures usually fall below freezing from November to March.
However, the warmer weather will melt and freeze the snow several times replacing hard compact snow with hazardous black ice. So it seems what comes around goes around: road traffic produces the carbon dioxide emissions that cause global warming global warming produces the conditions that cause major traffic chaos.
