• The economies of having your own weighbridge depend on your operating doctrine. For vehicles that never load at base there's no point, but for distributors it might be a more cost-effective solution than on-board systems at around £2,500 each.
"For a trade-standard weighbridge you must have one of sufficient size to take the entire vehicle in one go, as axle weighing is not acceptable," says Phil Jones, Weighbridge Service Engineer with Avery Berkel—which installs around 200 weighbridges a year in the UK.
"For a fleet including artics you need a 15-metre long weighbridge and these usually have a capacity of 50 tonnes," he explains.
"Once installed there is no legal requirement for regular calibration, but most companies have an annual check, and Trading Standards can come and test the equipment at any time," Jones adds.
"Surface-mounted weighbridges cost in the region of £15,000 if you have a level area of ground, whilst a pit-Installed system, including the foundations, would be closer to £20,000," he concludes.
