II The cost of not having easy access to a weighbridge can be very high indeed.
The Vehicle Inspectorate's figures for the period April 1999 to March 2000 show 63,849 vehicles were checked leading to 2,818 prohibitions where partial unloading was required for the vehicle to continue. Another 2,694 were reported for prosecution, leading to a total of 2,394 convictions.
Although magistrates have some flexibility in the penalty, fines of up to £5,000 can be imposed— and all offences are reported to the relevant Traffic Commissioner.
