We now have a new Transport Secretary to replace Stephen Byers in the shape of Alistair Darling. It is disappointing to note that Mr Darling has had no previous experience of the transport industry, let alone road transport.
But qualification for the job can hardly be expected in a government of career politicians, former lawyers and lecturers. It is time that this government got to grips with the very severe problems facing the road transport industry, which is a vital cog in the wheel of the UK economy.
The price of fuel, congestion, the state of our road and motorway network, theft of or from vehicles along with government and EU regulation and red tape are all issues that Mr Darling and his cabinet colleagues need to start tackling without delay.
